Spring is here!

Following Spring Break, we once again return renewed and ready to make the most of our last weeks with students before summer break. Relaxing and spending time with my family -especially my young children- is so powerful at reminding me why we do the work we do every day in schools.

While testing season is upon us, and some may not enjoy this time of year, I feel excited by what our students will show us about their learning. I have seen the hard work and excitement about learning in our students and teachers this year. As our students sit down for the tests, some are nervous, but they are ready to show what they have learned. We always wish we had more time with our kids before the tests to teach them a few more things or build their stamina for reading and writing just a little bit more, but really, they are ready.

We have many fun events coming up at WJES that we hope you are as excited about them as we are. We are spending the next couple of days in classrooms doing the final student portion of our visioning work for the year. I am looking forward to sharing our results and ideas for moving forward before the end of the year. Our BAM (Accountability Meeting-all are welcome) is on April 19th and we will be talking about some of those outcomes and changes for the upcoming school year. We start at 4:30 and hope you can make it.

We are also in our hiring season and have teacher interviews in April. Our first position we are hiring for is our full time kindergarten teacher as Mrs. Beabout is "hanging up her crayons" as she likes to put it. She promises to come back and visit and even do some substitute teaching next year. We wish her well!!!

We also have our Spring Carnival on Friday, April 20th and hope you will join us. Our PTA is also doing a super fun Silent Auction on May 5th for Cinco de Mayo and those events are always a great time. It is their only big fundraiser for the year and we hope you can join us and be a part of the fun.

Our PARCC (state testing) scores improved and our rating increased from "Improvement" to the highest rating of "Performance". Our teaching and support staff, as well as our students, have worked hard this year and continue in our efforts to improve the abilities of our students to be thoughtful readers, writers, mathematicians and citizens. While we know that test scores do not tell the WHOLE story, we fully appreciate the importance they play in preparing our students for middle school, high school, college and life!

We are looking forward to embracing Expeditionary Learning (EL) for the 2018-2019 School Year in conjunction with a Jeffco EL Cohort that just got started. This is a great opportunity for our school and will offer our students an amazing opportunity for even more hands-on, engaging, authentic and highly rigorous learning both in the classroom and out in our community and the great outdoors. Be on the lookout for more information coming home soon about EL. For now, you can check out the EL Website at

We are excited about the opportunities ahead at West Jefferson Elementary and we look forward to engaging in the last part of the school year with you. Please feel free to reach out and contact me with any questions, comments or ideas. We are always looking for ways to better meet the needs of students and families as we embrace the Jeffco Generations Vision.

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Wendy Woodland
