Happy New Year!

As we return from our winter break, the excitement of learning has returned in full force to our building. It is truly amazing what some time to rest, rejuvenate and reflect can do for us as teachers, leaders and learners.

As we get back into the swing of school, we are focused on many different things. As a school we are continuing our focus on providing a high quality education with a challenging and empowering learning experience for all of our learners. We continue our work to support our learners through Breakfast being offered every morning in our cafeteria from 8:15-8:45. Students will continue to have two recesses every day- one before lunch and one with their classroom teacher either in the morning or afternoon. Also, this year we have added 5 more minutes for kids to eat lunch. Starting this month, thanks to the Tiny Town Foundation, we will be offering a protein snack once a week on the first day of the week.  We are also offering the 100 Mile Club for our students with opportunities before and after school as well as during the lunch recess. During the month, each class is getting two lessons focusing on social emotional development for kids from our Social Emotional Learning Specialist as well as follow up lessons/activities on the off weeks. Students get a yoga/mindfulness lesson each month as well. We have continued these opportunities in our efforts to support our students in learning to take care of themselves both physically and emotionally.

While all of the above-mentioned supports are wonderful, we also continue to strive for higher academic growth and achievement for our students. Students are reading and writing more and across all contents. Our math curriculum, while challenging, is engaging and has been pushing our math thinking to new levels. We also continue to create learning experiences across contents with a focus on science and social studies that get students involved in their learning and connect the learning to real life experiences. Our students are truly becoming lifelong learners!

Our PARCC (state testing) scores improved and our rating increased from "Improvement" to the highest rating of "Performance". Our teaching and support staff, as well as our students, have worked hard over the last year and continue in our efforts to improve the abilities of our students to perform on these tests. While we know that test scores do not tell the WHOLE story, we fully appreciate the importance they play in preparing our students for middle school, high school, college and life!

We are excited about the opportunities ahead at West Jefferson Elementary and we look forward to sharing a wonderful school year with you. Please feel free to reach out and contact me with any questions, comments or ideas. We are always looking for ways to better meet the needs of students and families as we embrace the Jeffco Generations Vision.

Looking forward to seeing you all,
